Martha Austin, Taylorsville
Nine years ago, Martha went to work as usual on Feb. 14. However, her husband brought her a Valentine’s Day surprise.
“My husband showed up at work with my son, who was almost a year old, with a dozen red roses from my son,” Martha said. “I was so shocked and surprised.”
It was a considerable feat that her husband, Kevin, managed to pull off, surprising Martha. She and Kevin work together, and although they drive to work separately, Martha said she usually dropped her son, Tanner, off at the babysitter on her way to work in the morning.
However, Martha said her husband is truly someone special. They met at work and dated only 13 weeks before getting married. They’ve been married almost 11 years.
Debra
For five years, Debra and her husband tried to conceive, and were unable to. So, more than a decade ago, they put their names on adoption lists and in ads around the country, hoping to create a family, Debra said.
The director of a program at her church learned of an adoption program that was through word-of-mouth, in which you wrote detailed information about you and your home, and included photos of yourself and your home. The birth mothers chose which family they wanted their children to be placed with. Debra said she and her husband completed an application, hoping they would be chosen.
On Valentine’s Day that year, she was called by a birth mother from the adoption agency and told that she and her husband were selected as the parents for that mother’s adoption.
“I can’t imagine anything as wonderful as this. There was nothing like getting that phone call,” Debra said. “We even got to have his sonograms.”
Debra said she and her husband were overjoyed to learn that they would be getting a child, and that their wait was over. Debra said they’ve been blessed with a child who’s so loving. He was even born two days before Mother’s Day, and the birth mother gave her a Mother’s Day card, when she got to bring him home the day after his birth.
“This child is the love of my life,” Debra said.
Patricia Lang, Hickory
Three years ago, Patricia Lang’s husband passed away in January after 43 years of marriage. At the funeral, Patricia’s friend, Julie Peters, asked her if she wanted to go out to dinner on Tuesday to just have a nice evening out.
“I said yes, not realizing what day it was. When I got home and looked at my calendar, I saw that it was Valentine’s Day. I called up Julie to cancel, and she said that she knew it was Valentine’s Day, and that’s why she asked me out to dinner that night. She didn’t want me to be alone,” Patricia said.
Patricia said she it meant a lot that her friend did that, because Peters was married with children. She said that Peters had already arranged with her husband for him to stay home with the children on Valentine’s Day, while Peters went out with Patricia.
“It was such a nice, light evening. She picked me up and we went to DaVinci’s. We just kind of laughed and had a good night,” Patricia said. “It meant a lot.”
She said they were good friends before that night, but their friendship has since turned into a very special bond.

Hickory - For many of us, Valentine’s Day is a time for romance and love. It’s a time to be wined and dined, for dinner and dancing or, at the very least, a night out of the house.
However, as these three women will show us, Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be about a romantic love. There are many other things that can happen on Valentine’s Day to make it a day that will be one that is utterly unforgettable.
