Say ‘I Do’ to reading blog on Thursday

At least 19 couples will exchange vows on Valentine’s Day at the Register of Deeds Office - and I’ll be there.

NEWTON - To many of my family and friends, and on my MySpace page, I dubbed 2007 the “Year of the Weddings.”

My brother and cousin got hitched; two former co-workers said “I Do”; and I lost my two best friends in the world to men.

But my “Year of the Weddings” really started a year ago when I covered 23 couples say “I Do” at the courthouse. It was so much fun. I may have gone into the morning with doubts about marriage, but I left the day extremely happy for those who exchanged their vows.

And, hopefully, you were along for the ride with me. I blogged throughout the day as the couples promised to love, honor and cherish one another and shared wedding cake and punch.

I’ll be back this year. Register of Deeds Donna Hicks Spencer said last year was such a success that she planned another event on Valentine’s Day. This year, there are more sponsors and more opportunities for couples to have professional photos taken and a chance at a weekend getaway.

So far, 19 couples have signed up. As we learned last year, several will show up throughout the day after spontaneously deciding at Wal-Mart (Richard Smith and Josie Martin) to get married.

It’s not too late to pre-register and make an appointment for this year’s ceremony, which is recommended. A North Carolina marriage license is $50. The pastor service fee is $20. And that’s it. The romantic setting is free, and expect a possible visit from a group of fantastic singers. To learn more or sign up to get married on Valentine’s Day, call the Register of Deeds Office at 465-1573.

I’m ready. (Not to get married, but to blog about the weddings!) I’ve prepped my feet, my writing hand and my heart for Thursday’s event. All you need to do is bookmark the Web site, http://www.hickoryrecord.com, and click the Going to the Chapel button. I’ll be there bright and early Thursday. Weddings are expected to start around 8:30 a.m.
